The Whelks Acoustic Band from Warren, RI

The Whelks are a spirited three-piece of upright bass, violin, and guitar that play classic bluegrass, country, folk, and Americana, as well as their own songs; all dressed up in glorious three part harmony! Classically trained instrumentalists and singers Erin Mason (Oberlin) and Peri Delorenzo (Indiana University) are joined by genre-hopping roots guitarist Mark Dobbyn (Bates College) in a tight and swinging musical outfit that is at home playing songs to dance close to, or to lift the roof off the bar. The Whelks eschew bubble-gum pop and modern radio country and prefer their tunes classic and timeless. If you have a song that's special, they'll likely know it or learn it to play for you. The Whelks songbook is deep and varied. They can do full sets of classic country (think George and Tammy, Waylon, Willie, Merle, etc.), bluegrass (think Bill Monroe, Stanley Brothers, O Brother Where Art Thou?) folk and Americana (Gillian Welch, John Prine, Bob Dylan, etc.). And a full set of their own unique compositions. Additionally they have a deep well of Celtic material including several sets worth of traditional Irish ballads and fiddle tunes and even a set of Robert Burns songs and Scottish ballads to accompany traditional Burns Day festivities.
