Social media has made sharing engagement photos so fun, easy, and expected that engagement photo sessions have become a standard part of the wedding planning process, and another form of couple self-expression.
What's all the rage in engagement photos? Here are 5 trends in his art form.
From balloons to pets to vintage cars, props are a great way to relax into your photo shoot. Why are props so popular? They let you take the focus off of yourselves and onto something else. Plus, they're just fun!
Photographer Ed Hafizov of Zorz Studios once did an engagement shoot that lasted for 36 hours (with a power nap included). Not every couple likes the idea (or can afford) a multi-day session with an artist, but the idea that your engagement photos aren't just a record of that day, but works of art, is definitely growing.
A few years ago we started to see a lot of real wedding submissions that featured shots of bridal parties and even brides and grooms with no heads! Judging by other wedding blogs, we weren't alone. The trend is most likely the result of an increase in the popularity of artsy wedding photography (see trend number two) and Pinterest. On Pinterest, pictures without faces tend to be pinned and repinned more often than those with faces. Pinterest users like to be able to imagine themselves in the shot and someone else's face interferes with that. Many shots are great close-ups of hands, which also have the advantage of showing off the engagement ring.

Just like boudoir shoots, shots of the couple lounging in bed or kissing passionately aren't for everyone. But with everyone carrying a camera in her purse, couples today are used to being photographed. Constant photography has broken down some of the inhibitations about where and what can be photographed. Artfully done shots of a great kiss or a private moment can give the couple a beautiful token of their early relationship.
From Star Wars to romances like The Notebook, recreating scenes from your favorite movie, or bringing in elements of fantasy, have become popular attention-getting engagement photos. This can be an especially great idea for couples who want to incorporate fantasy elements into their wedding, but don't want to overdo it. A fantasy photo shoot lets you get out that creative energy.
Don't forget though, trends change quickly. Being on trend can be fun, but what's most important is that you love the experience and the photos. Almost anything can be a trend. As Blaga Ditrow of Lush Life Photography says, "Today, old is trend, new is trend, New York is trend..."
