Halloween is a holiday that calls for elaborate, over-the-top celebrations that allow adults to take on another identity while venues are transformed into a haunting backdrop for an eerie and exciting event. When it comes to selecting a venue that is perfect for a spooky shindig, it doesn't get much better than hosting a Halloween event at a mansion, (turned haunted of course). So, when Gerard Carelli of the Gerard Carelli Orchestra (NY,NY) reached out to tell us about an amazing annual Halloween gig he plays at an extravagant mansion, we knew we had to share the thrilling details. Gerard was happy to give us the scoop on this fabulous party. Take a look at what he had to say about this frightfully fun event:
The party takes place in the country in an old mansion at the top of a hill. The setting seems to get people into the mood. It's right out of a movie; in fact it was used years ago in "The Secret of My Success" starring Michael J. Fox. The party has a different theme each year such as Harry Potter last year, and The Nightmare Before Christmas movie this year. The event is put on as a fund raiser so it’s for a good cause. But, it also affords the people that work year round to be wild and crazy along with their friends and associates. The decorations are plentiful - as you approach the mansion there are lit bags lining the long driveway with jack o' lanterns and spooky creatures hanging from trees. I love the statue of the old craggy gentleman who gently startles you when you arrive with a recorded greeting. Every room in the house is decorated (if it’s used for the evening). Throughout the whole mansion there is fog, spooky sounds, lanterns, candles and talking mannequins. There's also an amazing train exhibit that takes up an entire room. Attendees love to get dressed up at this party. Everyone comes dressed as someone or some "thing" and they're very creative beyond a mask or stock Target costume; they really get into it. A few of my favorites were two individuals who dressed as a corn field joined by a fence; and a guy in a white jump suit dancing to "Saturday Night Fever." The host is also an amazing Beetlejuice look alike who acts the part (complete with his ranting and outbursts). As the band, we come dressed in black with a mask or two - picture Jason Voorhees playing trombone and singing “Witchcraft”. We play everything from Sinatra to Gaga with an emphasis on song requests like "Boris the Spider", “Monster Mash,” “Spooky,” “Thriller” and of course "Werewolves of London".
Throughout the party guests can either be inside where it's warm, in a connecting tent dancing to our music or outside at the bar for a blast of fresh air. There's a variety of fall food and drink including some Halloween themed dips & lots of candy. There's a fall beer on tap & a variety of wine and soft drinks. The bar is outside and there's usually a chill in the air. There's nothing like fall on the East Coast. This is our fourth year playing at this Halloween party. The first year, the event started with about 50 or 60 guests. Now there's well over a hundred. I think it really shows the value of live music and what it adds to an event. I've always got great musicians with me and people love watching us do what we do. When it comes to hosting a great Halloween party (or any event really), have live music if you can afford it, it just seems to make any party more festive. When great musicians are having a blast performing for your guests, it adds an infectious air of fun!
I would like to give a big thanks to Gerard Carelli and the rest of his band for sharing this wonderful event with us! To see the Gerard Carelli Orchestra in action, take a look at their Press Kit. What do you think of this extravagant Halloween Party? Let us know in the comments below.
