Celtic Handfasting with Bagpipes

Marta Block

When Merri and Dave got married this January, they wanted to do something that represented them. They chose a Celtic handfasting ceremony and hired GigMasters' bagpiper Daniel Meyers to help bring their concept to life. Daniel specializes in the Uileann (Irish) and traditional piping. Here's how Merri describes the day.

Our wedding... I would describe it as "us." We wanted a rustic, elegant, atheist, celtic, arts & crafts wedding with some glitter attached. There are pictures of the handfasting which we chose because it was a symbolic representation of how we have lived our lives together so far. We used dried flowers (island lavender, flax, broom-bloom, barley, and wheat) instead of live flowers because it was January and honoring the season was important to us. All of the centerpieces were hand made by us- we paid folks at a barn in North Brookfield $20 for 200 old mason jars which we wrapped in yarn, twine, and white lace cut from my mother's old wedding dress. The bridesmaids carried lanterns instead of bouquets and those lanterns were hung behind us under a chuppah that my carpenter husband made and wrapped in fabric. Instead of tossing a bouquet we passed a lantern to my grandparents who have been married for 59 years. And it wouldnt be a Marum [Dave's family] wedding without a little Marum nudity- so you'll see some dance shots of my husband and our friends letting loose. A snow storm delayed everything about an hour. Our amazing pipe player arrived on time and without issue, only to bring our guests to tears with his music!
