Father of the Bride and Liz Taylor

Father’s day always makes me think of one of my favorite chick-flicks: Father of the Bride. When I got engaged, my dad and I watched it together and when we both had tears in our eyes, we both blamed it on imaginary dust in the air or something else in our eye. Ah, bonding. In honor of this Sunday and this very good movie, let’s take a look at three Father/Daughter wedding movies.

Father of the Bride (1950): An oldie but a goodie, this film starts our current celebrity wedding obsession. You could call Elizabeth Taylor the first modern celebrity bride. She married "Nicky" Conrad Hilton Jr.. at 18, two days before the film’s premiere. MGM Studio gave the star the wedding gift of a look-alike dress to the one she wore in the film, which was later mass produced by Alfred Angelo. Sound familiar? That's because Alfred Angelo is also mass producing  a version of  Kate Middleton’s royal wedding dress! The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Father of the Bride (1991): And speaking of that, many people are torn which FOB film they like best because both are so good. For me, the basketball references bring the father/daughter relationship right to my childhood home’s driveway. And though it’s about the father/daughter, Diane Keaton really steals the show…I love FOB Part II, too!

The Godfather (part I): “On the day of my daughter’s wedding”…this very quotable movie is actually recognized by the American Film Institute for just that – being quotable. Most people don't think of it as a wedding movie, but what I like best is that the wonderfully vibrant wedding scene is only one of approximately 60 that features people eating or drinking. Buon appetito!
