How To Hire A Hypnotist

Chelsea Pellegrino

Only one kind of entertainer can make your guests forget their names, dance ballet and believe they're a famous celebrity all in the same sitting- a hypnotist! Your party is sure to be packed with laughs if you hire this unique performer, but what do you need to know before you book?

We asked our own experienced hypnotists to give some tips on how to find the best fit for your event.  Here's some of the great advice they shared:

Keep In Mind...

A hypnotist show is a kind of entertainment like no other. First and foremost, the hypnotist you hire should be fully licensed and certified. Dan Ladd (Collinsville, IL) advocates that you ask for a copy of their credentials. Hypnosis is far from dangerous, but it is important to have an experienced hypnotist with professional training. Denny More (Fredericksburg, VA) emphasizes the importance of choosing a hypnotist that is not just a clinical hypnotist, but an entertainer as well. To determine if they will put on a good show, Erick Kand (Saint Petersburg, FL) recommends reviewing their videos closely. He also suggests asking to see videos demonstrating an event that is similar to the one you are planning. This will give you the chance to see if they are entertaining, and also appropriate for the nature of your event.

Guest Stars

It is important to realize that it's not just the performer who determines the success of this show - it's the guests, too! Hypnotists rely solely on their volunteers to be cooperative and engaging. Members like Guy Michaels (Knoxville, TN) and Jeff Jay (Chicage, IL) recommend letting guests know when you are hiring a hypnotist, especially if it's going to be a large event. This gives guests time to decide if they would like to participate, and allows for a greater number of interested volunteers for the hypnotist to choose from.

Details, Details, Details

Sharing the smaller, often overlooked details about your event can really help ensure a successful show. This is especially true for hypnotists, because they often adjust their acts based on the audience size and venue. First, make sure there is a sound system either available at the venue or supplied by the hypnotist. Nothing is worse than an audience that can't hear the show! Next, be sure to discuss the set up of the stage or performance area, and have an adequate number of chairs for the volunteers to sit on. Joe Black (Kirkland, WA) also suggests making sure your performer is familiar with the atmosphere of the venue, and that lighting and noise level will not effect their show.

Q & A

Our hypnotists suggest asking some of the following questions before you hire a performer for your next gig:

  • Are you licensed and insured?
  • Are you a member of a professional hypnotist organization?
  • Where did you train?
  • How long have you been performing for?
  • Why do you perform? "I believe hypnosis is one of the most fascinating forms of entertainment!"-Gerry Kelly (Amarillo, TX)
  • What kind of gigs do you typically perform for?
  • Can I read any reviews of your past shows?
  • Do you have any video demos I can view? "Listen for  laughter!" -Denise Oatley Hall (Thonotosassa, FL)
  • What do you rate the style of your act? (G, PG, PG-13, R)

Bottom line- if you're looking for a funny, interactive, one-of-a-kind show for your next big event, choose a hypnotist! Because hypnotists are so unique, they tend to fill up their schedules quickly, so Keith Kocher (Lansing, MI) urges you to book early! Start your search here.
