Ask the Experts: Wedding Vendors

Marta Block

Question: Which wedding vendors should sign contacts?

A: At GigMasters we strongly recommend signing a contract with ALL of your wedding vendors. If anyone is reluctant to sign a contract, or tries to talk you out of it, or doesn't have a standard contract easily available, you should take that as a very large, very red flag. Wedding contracts protect both you and the professional. They help you nail down details about your wedding, and prevent unpleasant surprises and charges. Most wedding contracts do not require you to have a lawyer read them, but you should read them carefully yourself. Some things to pay special attention to:

  • Cancellation policy
  • Parking, delivery or other fees
  • Start and end time (make sure you have a clear understanding of what that means, is set up and clean up time included)
  • If you are signing with a larger company, are you guaranteed to have the service provider (DJ, photographer, singer) that you want?
  • Who will provide insurance?

If you want to make any changes to the provider's standard contract, make sure to get those changes in writing before you sign the contract. For more information, check out this blog post on entertainment contracts.
