"Jared Munch is a professional stand up paddle board athlete based out of Duluth, MN. During the summer of 2015, he became the first and only person to ever circumnavigate Lake Superior on a stand up paddle board - paddling 1,300 miles unsupported solo over 50 days while camping on remote and rugged shorelines. He was awarded the “Expedition of the Year” by SUPtheMag for this amazing feat. In 2019, he endured another task of paddling from Duluth, MN, to the southernmost tip of the Arctic Ocean - covering 920 miles unsupported over a 39 day period while enduring open water, hundreds of whitewater rapids, and many miles of portaging through remote wilderness. Both of these journeys were completed entirely by Jared’s own individual effort, ambition, and resilience as he was forced to believe in himself when society as a whole did not. Despite the journeys being grueling and expensive to partake in, Jared felt that the completion of these journeys was merely a privilege at its finest, and opted to pay for everything out of pocket while donating 100% of the over $6,000 raised to the Neighborhood Youth Service of Duluth, MN to provide outdoor programming, homework help, and life-enrichening activities to at-risk youth.
Currently, Jared utilizes his professionalism, recognitions, knowledge and relentless enthusiasm to promote the sport of stand up paddle boarding while inspiring others to find their true passions and potential both on and off the water. Aside from speaking exclusively on the account of his extreme travels to outdoor adventure groups, Jared caters services to middle/high school student bodies, youth-service providers, college students and aspiring young professionals and entrepreneurs alike, non-profit foundations, podcast hosts, and more. Through using narratives of his extreme travels as a main storyline, Jared is able to elaborate on the hurdles and sacrifices he had to make to achieve his dreams while integrating select messaging to his target audience that include substance-free messaging, self-empowerment, mental well-being and healthy self-development, internet bullying and the age of information, isolation, networking and the entrepreneurial mindset, the very bumpy path to success, work/life balance, the significance of employee appreciation, employee burnout and contention, and more as he talks his way through how he came to and managed to achieve his various feats of extreme travel on a stand up paddleboard while simultaneously living the life of a full-time college student working full-time on the side to achieve his dream. Jared also speaks on behalf of establishing and managing his own professional-grade paddle/surf and water safety education company while working full-time as an engineer. At SUPerior Paddle Academy, Jared operates as the premier stand up paddle instruction and guiding service in the Midwest region - with services including whitewater stand up paddle instruction, guided paddle tours during the winter on Lake Superior, instructor training, year-round surf instruction on Lake Superior, online private coaching, group training clubs, and more.
Utilizing his extreme ventures on a stand up paddleboard as a main storyline, presentation formats consists of photos, video, and props to provide explanations of personal motivations, details of specific precautions and preparations, highs and lows of the journeys, financial and mental challenges leading into and out of the journeys, and more in addition to specific messaging requested by the presentation host. Typical speaking time is one hour followed by a period for questions and comments. Longer or shorter presentations can be arranged upon request.
Through his LLC SUPerior Paddle Academy, Jared is proud to donate 10% of all earnings he makes through instructional services to the Neighborhood Youth Service, located in the Central Hillside Neighborhood of Duluth, Minnesota. Jared also partners with the Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute by Allina Health to provide paddle sport programming and instruction to adaptive athletes in the Twin Ports region.
Outside of paddling and social causes, Jared utilizes his time to perform work as a marine civil and coastal engineer in the Great Lakes Region and down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico. As an engineer, Jared wears many hats and plays a pivotal role in a small company where he readily utilizes his work ethic and individual skills and interests to deliver professional solutions to real-world problems. Specifically, Jared manages geospatial data across multiple company sectors, performs calculations of wave sizes and forces, studies of sediment transport and erosion rates, hydrodynamic modelling of coastal regions, hydrographic surveying, and training/oversight of fellow engineers amongst various other tasks that allow him to put his surfer's and paddler's mindset and lifestyle passions to engineering and scientific applications."
