Who's Joel?
You'll probably remember Joel as "that speaker who plays with mousetraps;" but his real skill is helping people change the world. Joel is a success coach.

What does Joel do?
Joel specializes in leadership, creativity, and success.
Mostly, he is hired as a keynote speaker or workshop facilitator, but he also does some consulting, coaching, and other special projects.
He works with ambitious people and organizations: teachers, students, engineers, non-profits, companies, and everyone else who's trying to change the world.* (*Interestingly, they often won't say it that way, even though it's accurate.)
He's hilarious and engaging, but his stories and demonstrations (like playing with a few hundred mousetraps) always have a deeper purpose and message.
He strives for integrity in his personal life: He walks his talk.
He's experienced and trustworthy on the stage: He has spoken to thousands of students, educators, and other professionals across North America since 2006.
Overall: Joel teaches people to be more creative, caring, and insightful, so they can be more successful.

Want a longer story?
Joel Hilchey teaches sustainability at McMaster University, and he speaks at events across North America about leadership, success, and what holds people back. You'll probably remember him as the speaker who plays with mousetraps, but his real skill is helping people change the world.

At McMaster, Joel runs the final year course "Sustainability and Ethics in Engineering". After totally redesigning and delivering the course with great acclaim, he was also selected to help develop an innovative new course called "The McMaster Sustainable Future Project", which was based on experiential education and project-based learning.

Joel is the author of a children's book - The Time to Climb, two e-books on leadership and success, and he is co-developing an app to help teachers teach creativity in the classroom. He is also the co-author of Refocus - A Practical Guidebook for Building a Sustainability Program that's Important to the CEO.

The Beanstalk Project is a youth engagement initiative to develop youth leadership, promote global citizenship, and create positive social change. At "unconference" events and training workshops across North America, students learn social entrepreneurship skills, connect with mentors, and jump-start their own exciting community projects.

Joel graduated from McMaster University, in Ontario, Canada in 2006 with a degree in Engineering Physics, minoring in business. In 2008, he completed his Master's degree in Environmental Engineering at the University of Toronto, where he focused on the intersection and connection of technology, society, and the environment. Specifically, he studied sustainable technologies, policy and decision-making processes, and the elements of sustainable cities and communities. His education gives him a unique mix of technical savvy, social awareness, and practical business acumen.

Having spent his university years as a residence community advisor and leadership developer with ropes courses and ground initiatives, he is well-trained in experiential education and is a skilled and experienced facilitator for corporate groups, non-profits, educational staff, and sports teams. His keynotes & workshops have helped schools with leadership development, bullying prevention, student engagement, high school transition programs, environmental conferences, and much more. From 2006 to 2011, Joel was active as the Eastern Canada Presenter for School Specialty & Premier School Agendas, and in that capacity, he is a certified presenter for Covey's "7 Habits of Highly Effective People/Teens."

Joel is a proud member, and one of the youngest members, of the Canadian Association of Professional Speakers and its international umbrella organization, the Global Speakers Federation.

A volunteer and supporter of Engineers Without Borders, Joel says he has been fortunate to spend time with many amazing people who have helped inspire and shape his beliefs regarding the value of service learning, the importance of human development both locally and overseas, and the amazing power of human passion.

A man of many talents, Joel is an amateur actor, singer, juggler and magician. His barbershop quartet "Test Drive" is the current Ontario District Champion, and he won an International gold medal as a member of the Toronto Northern Lights in the Barbershop Harmony Society's Chorus Contest in 2013. Joel is also an artistic coach and the vice-chair of the board of the internationally-renowned Hamilton Children's Choir. He loves travelling, rock climbing, yoga, and tasting exotic foods.

Joel married his wonderful wife, Kathleen Wright (who happens to be an amazing high school teacher and anti-bullying expert), in 2014, and they live with their son in Hamilton, Ontario.

Overall Talent

Joel was a hit with our team! He tailored his presentation to reinforce the key messages we wanted to deliver to staff and they learned a number of important lessons about themselves and their peers. Not only that, they had fun doing it. Weeks later they are still talking about it. Well done Joel and Thank You!

Overall Talent

Joel's presentation to our high school students was spot on. He presented in a somewhat difficult situation (750 students in a Gym) and was flexible, worked with what equipment we had available and still got his message across in a positive way. If I could have given him a higher score for how accommodating he was, I would have. The kids responded positively to him and we are already talking about having him back next year. Thanks for everything Joel!
