WELLS “My Purpose was and my legacy is to shine the light of truth on the darkness of evil.” These are the words of Ida B. Wells, a courageous African American woman and a pioneering investigative journalist over one hundred years ago. Her words are still relevant today and are appropriate in this time of Black Lives Matter, racial reckoning, and political discord. Wells was awarded a Pulitzer Prize (posthumously) for Investigative Journalism in 2020. In this riveting, ‘media enhanced’ portrayal, Shine the Light of Truth: Ida B. Wells written and performed by award-winning actress, Debra Mims, Ida B. Wells “returns” to accept the Pulitzer Prize she was posthumously awarded in 2020. She reflects on the current events and takes the audience back to the past, retelling the powerful events of her inspiring life story, and reconnects with events of the present day. There is a 15+ minute talk back to answer questions and allow for reflection. The program is suitable or audiences 12 years old and up. Length: 60 minutes. DISCLAIMER: The program details, lynching and rioting. DISCRETION IS ADVISED. My Grandmother Told Me Debra Mims' grandmother used to say, "If you don't know where you've been, how you gonna know where you're going?" In this tribute to African-American women from slavery to the present, as Grandma Sally Kathryn, Ms. Mims tells the audience where they've been, and gives them the confidence to make decisions as to where they are going. With stories about Harriet Tubman and Sojourner Truth, as well as first-person narratives of women through the years, the audience leaves this presentation with a new found respect, not just for African American women, but for all people who have the courage to stand up for their beliefs. Debra Mims' grandmother used to talk about the importance of education. She would say, "You get that education, 'cause it's something that no one can ever take away from you." Ms. Mims remembers hearing stories about how some of her relatives escaped slavery. She says, "Many years later, I still feel my granny's spirit talking to me and inspiring me to share the histories of African-American women. I know that I'm a storyteller too, and that's why I want to tell children the stories that My Grandmother Told Me. School AssemblyReviewed on September 28, 2023From Malvern, PA

Ms. Mims was fantastic! She was professional and so interactive with our students. She presented to our Middle School and kept them totally engaged and more importantly they learned about areas of history they didn't perhaps know. It was age appropriate and easy for young audiences to absorb.

School AssemblyReviewed on February 24, 2022From Towson, MD

Ms. Mims is amazing! We invited her for our Black History month celebration. "My Grandmother Told Me" was interactive and informative for my middle school students. She does a really good job of bringing characters and stories to life. My middle school students a hard to excite or please. Ms. Mims jumped right in and won them over from the start. Recommend her for any group or schools who want to engage students in African-American history.

MeetingReviewed on June 16, 2020From Edgewater, MD

Debra was enchanting. We hired her to tell stories for a K-12 Scout troop virtual "campfire" meeting. Her content was perfect for the age spread! She was so engaging and we were all riveted, even though we were only meeting via Zoom! She made me want to experience her storytelling for adult audiences sometime soon. She has an incredible gift, and it was so special having her share stories that have been handed down in her family for generations. She is a true Maryland treasure!
