The bagpipes is an instrument that is sure to have quite the impact on your event. The experience and competence of the piper will determine whether that impact is uplifting of excruciating. In the 18 years I have been playing the highland bagpipes, I have performed at well over a hundred events, had the opportunity to teach dozens of students including being the director of bagpipes at the McCallie prep school and have had a leadership position in pipe bands to assist in making them sound their best.
The pipes have a number of elements that need to be carefully addressed to insure the quality of the performance. Proper maintenance of the pipes make the richness of the tone and ease of tuning far easier. Having an ear for tuning is essential. Few things are as disappointing as a set of pipes that are out of tune. And, of course, playing ability.
