Early life & education Kabir Dalawari is a drummer, composer, and educator based in Chicago, Illinois. He studied Jazz Studies at Loyola University Chicago, where he also explored psychology and neuroscience — a unique combination that subtly informs his musical sensibility. Later, he went on to graduate studies in Jazz Performance at DePaul University, studying under noted educator and ethnomusicologist Dana Hall. Through this academic foundation, Dalawari has grounded himself not only in jazz technique and history, but also in a broad understanding of human cognition and musical perception — allowing him to approach rhythm, improvisation, and composition with depth and awareness. As Performer & Bandleader Dalawari leads his own ensembles which have become fixtures in the vibrant Chicago jazz scene. His band has played at some of the city’s top venues, including Andy’s Jazz Club, Winter's Jazz Club, Fitzgerald's, Evanston SPACE, and more. His playing and compositional style stand out for their rhythmic vitality, melodic richness, and dynamic interplay. According to a review in DownBeat Magazine, Dalawari’s music carries “rhythmic adeptness and a penchant for melody, harmony and dynamic.” This balance of rhythmic drive and harmonic sensitivity positions him as a modern drummer capable of leading engaging, exploratory jazz sessions that honor tradition while pushing forward. Recordings & Artistic Vision Dalawari’s debut album, Awareness, was released March 25, 2022. The compositions are deeply personal — for instance, the title track was inspired by his younger brother, who is autistic. For Dalawari, the piece is an expression of empathy, understanding, and supportive love. Illinois Presenters Network As his artistry developed, Dalawari released a sophomore record, Last Call (2024), featuring a book of kinetic, original jazz compositions. The album alternates between quintet and sextet formats, showcasing not only his drumming but his maturation as a composer capable of creating nuanced, emotionally resonant pieces. Critics have compared the work to ensembles like Brian Blade Fellowship for its blend of modern sensibilities with jazz tradition. His compositions on Last Call explore complex emotional and conceptual themes — for example, one track symbolizes letting go of toxic relationships, while others reflect on turbulence and introspection. Dalawari describes his artistic vision as a fusion of traditional jazz language with a contemporary approach, drawing inspiration from African, Indian, and Western musical roots. This multicultural sensibility, combined with his cognitive background, gives his music both depth and breadth. Educator & Mentor Beyond performance, Dalawari is deeply invested in education and community. He holds a faculty position at Amos Alonzo Stagg High School and teaches drums and percussion at institutions such as People’s Center for Cultural & Contemporary Arts in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood. He’s known for being patient, adaptable, and deeply thoughtful as a teacher — able to guide beginners and advanced students alike with tailored lessons, a strong sense of theory, and love for performance. Kabir Dalawari In addition, Dalawari serves as a judge for the Bitter Jester Music Festival, contributing to a growing community of musicians and helping to uplift emerging jazz voices. Why Kabir Dalawari Matters Kabir Dalawari represents a generation of jazz musicians who combine technical mastery with emotional depth, cultural awareness, and educational commitment. He navigates the tensions between tradition and innovation — honoring jazz’s roots while pushing the music forward through composition, multicultural sensibility, and personal storytelling. Through his dual role as performer and educator, he contributes to both the immediate vitality of the Chicago jazz scene and the long-term growth of the next generation of musicians. With albums like Awareness and Last Call, and with continued involvement in live performance and teaching, Dalawari is carving a distinctive and meaningful path in contemporary jazz.
