Lifoti Entertainment Magazine, November 2019: "Suzanne Brooks and the Innovative Musicians of The Jazz Generation perform in many genres. Twelve CDs, 2 musicals and 4 books are the result. Suzanne Brooks is Singer, Songwriter, Bandleader of The Jazz Generation Band originally from Philadelphia, PA, now based in Sacramento CA, she has retained the influences of East Coast Jazz, R&B, The Philly Sound, Latin/Caribbean rhythm, love of language diversity--especially Spanish, folk songs and country music, and the influence of deep family Gospel roots. A Jazz Stylist who writes, produces & directs her own musical shows and recordings in her own studio and on her own label. She is an independent recording artist with 11 CDs, covers and original music with a huge repertoire in multiple genres and languages. Also a literary writer: poems, fiction, nonfiction, one-act drama and public speaker on social issues, she is also a lover of dance and theater. She has a history as a teacher-tutor devoted to and proud of her students. Presently, she is converting her audio studio to a live/video streaming studio. Chris Lee, keyboard; Gary Symington drums; and Gary Kirven, bass;--are her musical anchors. Every member of the group is exceptional in talent, sight-reading, experience & travel, enabling Brooks to draw on a huge repertoire in multiple genres, including jazz, R&B, pop, blues, Latin, Hawaiian, soft rock, Gospel and more. Members of the band perform as vocalist plus one to 4 musicians. Special: concerts/lectures & original shows, "Great Women of Jazz, 1890-1990," “I Believe I Can Fly (2010) & "Aurora" included dancers" and, at times, collaboration with Afro-Uruguayan Candombe Drum School Founder, Sergio Ortuno (in Uruguay, South America) who has collaborated with Brooks in writing or recording 2 songs--"Candombe" and "Aurora" in 2011. A third show: “Time After Time: Jazz of the Past Reflected in Jazz Today," introduced in 2012, was recorded at Sacramento's Track Shack Studios. More about our Musicians Christopher Lee began playing classical piano at the age of three and began learning jazz piano in high school. Chris continues to pursue his musical passion through his frequent performances with Sacramento- area musicians. Chris attributes his jazz education to the formal and informal encounters he has had over the years with area musicians including Craig Faniani, Jerry Murphy, Bobby Bradford (while in college in Southern California), Joe Gilman, Steve Roach, Mike Kelley, Aaron Garner, and Paul Klempau. Chris has performed with a number of musical groups such as the CSUS Latin Jazz Ensemble and the Moonlight Swing Big Band, and has appeared in the Mondavi Center, the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee, and the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival. Pianist with the Jazz Generation for 19 + years, Chris is noted for exceptional improvisation & classical background. Has also performed around the region with the CSUS Latin Jazz Ensemble. Gary Symington is a professional drummer/percussionist who brings many years of experience as a musician and fine artist. Gary has been a full-time illustrator and graphic designer for over 35 years, painting in oils on canvas with passion. He has played drums and vibes in a successful Sacramento based tribute band, before joining The Jazz Generation. Gary Kirven, is an exceptional, expert bassist and a tenor vocalist. A down to earth, crazy, funny professional musician, recording and touring artist who plays all styles and can read charts. He plays R&B, Jazz, Funk, Christian and Contemporary music. His musical influences are Marcus Miller. David Dyson. Mike Manson. Victor Wooten. Verdins White. He owns 10 bass guitars. Mtd , Fender, Tobias, Bass Mods, to name a few. His amplification is Aguilar,GK and Accugroove. Most recently, The Jazz Generation performed their show "Great Women of Jazz: History of Women of Music, 1890 to 1990, at the San Francisco Regional "Mensa Presents Brilliance by the Bay 2021," November 19-21 2021 for their annual Regional Gathering, at the Holiday Inn in San Jose, CA. G The old saying, it’s a man’s world,” has been true in the history of the jazz world. Opportunities for women as instrumentalists were few. Encouragement was limited. Those women who became stars in the world of jazz were usually vocalists. It isn’t that women couldn’t blow a horn or lead a band, society just resisted it. So women took the avenue open to them–vocalization–and excelled at it. The presentation, “Great Women of Jazz,” was conceived and developed to present a collection of vocalists and some of their songs from beginnings to the 1990s–a century of vocal music which encouraged and assisted social progress for jazz and for women. This show honors great women vocalists to whom we owe a great musical debt. The Jazz Generation band was established as a multi-ethnic, multi-generational band in 2003. Charlesetta Stalling, serves as narrator of "Great Women of Jazz".

Corporate FunctionReviewed on November 8, 2014From San Francisco, CA

Suzanne carried the utmost level of professionalism from the contracting phase to the event planning to the day of events. She took every step necessary to ensure that we had a successful event and even drove down from Sacramento to conduct a site visit to make sure she had the appropriate equipment for our event based on the acoustics of our space in San Francisco. Not to mention, their performance was perfection. I would highly recommend their services to anyone looking for their style of music.
