Guitarist Clint Smith is currently the leader of a jazz quartet that has performed regularly at clubs and private functions in the New York City and tri-state area for the past 3 years. The quartet, consisting of Mike Pinto on vibraphone, John Romey on bass, and John Thomas on drums, plays a combination of originals and standards from yesterday and today, with an emphasis on fusing collective improvisation with true renderings of a wide variety of jazz standards, popular music, and other genres. In addition, Smith is part of The Global Trio, a group that he co-leads with Seth Mehl on erhu (a 2-stringed Chinese instrument, predominantly used in Chinese opera and other traditional musical forms) and Bill Buchen (renowned tabla player and session musician; a former student of Zakir Hussein, he has performed in venues in the United States and overseas for more than 2 decades). They join Smith (playing acoustic guitar) playing traditional music from China, the Middle East, and Africa as well as unusual and innovative renditions of songs from the songbook of American musicians such as Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and many others. Smith also plays classical and electric guitar solos as a solo performer; the repertoire includes jazz standards, classical music from the 18th and 19th centuries, and improvisations that find root equally in classical, flamenco, and jazz.
