My name is Bill Spivey and I've been playing the bagpipes for 15 years. I've had the pleasure of studying under the direction of Sir Adrian Melvin of Dundee Scotland. I currently serve as the Pipe Major and piping instructor for the "Dubuque Fire Pipes and Drums" pipe band in Dubuque Iowa. I am 60 years old, and have been retired for 6 years which has allowed me the luxury of devoting more time to playing, teaching, and enjoying the Great Highland Bagpipes. My full time job now is playing the bagpipes at funerals, weddings, parties, as well as teaching the Great Highland Bagpipes. If you hire me to play at your event, I'll do my best to see that your wishes and instructions are carried out as you wish. Weddings - The Great Highland Bagpipe can be a wonderful way to add a Celtic flavor to your wedding. The first thing you should know, however, is that there is no such thing as a "Traditional Scottish Wedding". I have played bagpipes for hundreds of weddings and each and every wedding I have done has been unique. You should utilize the bagpipes when and where you think it is most appropriate - after all, it is your wedding. I am always happy to help make suggestions and work with the bride to make sure the wedding day events are perfect. Funerals - There is something in the sound of the bagpipes that evokes our deepest emotions when we hear it. The sound of the bagpipe is probably most associated with funeral services and the song "Amazing Grace." The bagpipe adds a solemn and dignified touch to the funeral ceremony and can communicate a sense of closure. There is no doubt that the mournful and soulful sounds of the bagpipe release the emotions that are held inside. With the nature and timing of this type of service I can be available on short notice. I have played at a wide variety of memorials including church services, graveside ceremonies, wakes, and even at people's homes. Other Occasions - The Bagpipes can be played at just about any occasion. Over the years I have played at a wide variety of events ranging from Birthday Parties, Golf Tournaments, School Events, Retirements, New Years Eve, Christmas Parties, Wine Tastings, Pub Crawls, 9/11 memorials, and Parades.
