FULL BIO
My passion for music began as early as I can remember. I loved hearing my dad sing and play his guitar, mostly while recording his songs onto a Yamaha 4-track tape recorder in his bedroom, and I just wanted to learn how to play. My mom loved listening to the radio and singing along with what came on over the speakers of our 1988 Toyota Tercel, being anything from The Beach Boys to Michael Jackson, which only created a deep appreciation of music within me--not to mention my own desire to sing along. The first thing I ever wanted to learn how to play was the saxophone; I'm not sure why I did, but I clearly remember wanting to learn that first. My parents couldn't afford to get me a saxophone, but they could at least afford music lessons at the small private school I attended, so I finally started taking them at the age of ten. My first instrument? The piano!
From there, my musical interests only sprouted. I joined my school choir within a couple of years, and by my fifth year of piano, I started learning clarinet. That last one wouldn't last long, and after five years of piano and not really growing in it as much as I should have been, I decided to stop those lessons, too, because there was an instrument that I had always been keen on playing and desperately wanted to learn how to play--the guitar! Because my parents were separated and my mom had very little money to spare, I wouldn't learn how to play initially until I was at a Lutheran youth retreat at a Holiday Inn. One of the other boys there had brought his guitar...and three chords later, I was finally on my way to learning the instrument of my dreams.
I've now been playing guitar for over fifteen years, with experience as an acoustic player, an electric player, and a bass player. I still dabble on piano, but I'm more competent with several other instruments, like mandolin, banjo, drums, and some percussion. I started dabbling in writing my own songs within the first couple of years of playing guitar, though the bulk of songs I've written have been within the past eight years or so. My latest EP, "Nihilistic Romance," was recorded mostly by myself with the help of my best friend Seth Ellsworth at Scissorband Studios, and mixed and mastered by my good friend and current bandmate Brian Skeel. It's currently available for listening and purchasing at bandcamp.
My solo shows are typically about two hours and involve a good mix of interesting covers along with some original material. There are over sixty cover I've performed in past shows on top of the dozen or so of my own songs, so I can play a wide range of times (from a half hour up to four hours!). I like to cover my favorite artists, which include The Beatles, The Black Keys, Foo Fighters, Jimmy Eat World, The National, Pink Floyd, Toad the Wet Sprocket, Gillian Welch, Wilco, and many, many others. I've performed at number of places around Columbus, most notably at King Avenue 5, Columbus Commons Pavilion, and The Basement.
I've been a musician for the better part of my life (in more ways than one), and most of which I've performed alongside my good friend, Ron Freeman. I had the privilege of helping him record our last two albums, "Deaf Kids EP" and "Assassins EP," which were released in 2010 and 2013, respectively, and can be purchased on bandcamp and iTunes. We are currently in a band together called Lost Orchards with his wife, Savannah, our friend Brian, and Tyler Boych Birch, a newcomer to our circle who is one pretty awesome dude. I've played in a number of other bands with Ron, including Ron Freeman and The Revelators, Ron Freeman and The Deaf Kids, Better For Nothing, and The Brannock Device. I've also had the privilege of playing with The Moralists, The Magdalenes, and The Get Outs.
Lastly, if there's anything specifically you'd love for me to learn, just ask! I'm more than willing to accommodate anyone with their requests. All I ask is for patience to learn something if it's new or unfamiliar to me, and some understanding if I'm unable to learn it exactly the way it is (or at all). With that said, I'll always try my best--and I'll always look forward to learning something new!
